The Jovial Colliers Inn is located in the heart of the beautiful Forest of Dean which is bordered to the west by the River Wye and to the south by the River Severn. The Forest of Dean is England's second largest crown forest and is one of the few remaining ancient forests in britain.

The area has a rich history in mining with evidence of iron ore mining dating back to 8000 BC. Several mine tours can be arranged in the local area with large cave complexes existing at Clearwell Caves (5 miles) and Hopwell Colliery (3 miles). There are also three medieval castles close by dating back to the 12th Century AD. These castles are located at, Chepstow (15 miles), Goodrich (5 miles) and St Briavels (9miles).

If you like the great outdoors, we are ideally situated for walking, cycling, canoeing, and various other outdoor activities such as rock climbing and caving.

The Forest of Dean Cycle Centre (Pedalabikeaway) is just three miles away. This is a base for cycle exploration of the forest where bikes can also be hired to explore the Forest of Deans cycle tracks which stretch throughout the Forest of Dean linking up all the major areas of interest.

The River Wye is excellent for canoeing/kayaking with a wide variety of water conditions which are suitable for first timers and experienced canoeists. Several Canoeing Centres are located very close to the bunkhouse (less than 3 miles away) which makes us a great base for a canoeing holiday.

In addition to the rich history the higher reaches of the forest can be explored with a Go Ape Tree climbing center located at Mallards Pike (5miles).
